Week 6 Assignment # 2 & 3

For this assignment I decided to do a lesson on Helen Keller and the  Senses. It's a great ELA lesson and it even adds some Social Studies which I think is very important for the students. It's an interactive ELA lesson that incorporates braille, movies, worksheets, etc. I also included rubrics for both lessons.

UDL Lesson Plan
Lesson Overview:
Title: Helen Keller
Author: Melissa Slater
Subject: ELA/Social Studies
Grade Level: 2nd Grade
1.

Unit Description: This lesson is to teach students about Helen Keller an American historical figure. They will learn about her accomplishments, and what she symbolizes. A movie will be shown to the students to see and understand more about Helen Keller’s life, and creative writing activities will be done to support what they have learned.
Lesson Description 1: On the first day of this lesson a movie will be shown. The Miracle Worker (1962) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mi4kIcq4YKg
This movie is over an hour and half long so this will be the first day. After the movie there will be a discussion about the movie, characters, setting, and important facts.
Lesson Description 2:  Students will create a chart for CAUSE and EFFECT, and they will work in groups.
Lesson Description 3: Students will be able to see firsthand a book with braille in it and in each group they will be able to discuss what makes it different and unique. They will also be able to learn a few words in sign language.
State Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.1
Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.2
Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.3
Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.7
Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
Goals:
The Goal of this lesson is for students to learn about how remarkable Helen Keller was, and about her history. Watching the movie first allows for students to really visualize and see who Helen Keller lived, and they can see her accomplishments.
Unit Goals: After watching the movie the following day students must write notes on the movie, and write at least 3 important facts about Helen Keller. Then students must create a CAUSE and EFFECT Chart. Example: Cause: Helen got sick as a baby Effect: Helen became blind and deaf.
Lesson Goals: The Goal of this lesson is to learn to take notes, distinguish between CAUSE and EFFECT and to learn about an important woman historical figure. Students will also be able to have the opportunity to learn a few words in sign language and have the opportunity to see some books in Braille.
Methods:
·       Watch Movie
·       Discuss Helen Keller and important facts
·       Take Notes
·       Write Cause and Effect
·       Learn a few words in sign language
·       Show students Braille
Anticipatory Set:
Share lesson goals and objectives with students: Students will be discussing in groups the important facts about Helen Keller, and what they observed in the movie. They will need to also know about braille and what makes it special, and they will need to know what language the deaf use to communicate.
The students will work in groups, and use their notes to create a chart for CAUSE and EFFECT. This will allow for them to look back at their notes and review the important details about Helen Keller. After the students will all gather together and discuss their charts and they can compare and contrast their information.
On the third day students will be given the opportunity to watch another video on braille and sign language to better understand it. Then they will work in groups, and some of the students will be blind folded and have the chance to really see what it’s like to read braille. Then another groups will learn some words in sign language and they will communicate with each other. The groups will swap and get a chance to do a different activity.

Introduce and Model New Knowledge: Students will be learning about a new historical figure, and they will also be able to learn about braille and sign language. This is a new topic for many students because they aren’t knowledgeable in this subject area. Being able to watch the movie, videos, and experience braille and sign language first hand is a great way for all students to understand the lessons.
The teachers will be talk about Helen Keller before showing the movie to the students. The following day the teacher will start the discussion about the movie, and will demonstrate the CAUSE and EFFECT chart.
On the third day braille books will be provided to students and some will be blind folded and asked to touch the braille like in the video and see if they can make out what they are reading. In another group students will have sign language books, and they will have to use the words they are learning to communicate with their peers.

Provide Guided Practice: The teacher will assist the students and demonstrate all activities to them. Teacher will walk around when in group and participate in what they are doing, and that’s how the teacher will be able to see if the students are understanding the lesson.
Teacher will also have extra books, and websites to give or show to students if they need to gather more information.
Provide Independent Practice: Learning Centers
Students will have the opportunity to work in groups and work individually, and this depends on the center they are in. The majority of the centers are group work but Center 4 will allow for students to work individually and gather more information.
·       Center 1: CAUSE and EFFECT
·       Center 2: Braille
·       Center 3: Sign Language
·       Center 4: This will be a center with extra information on Helen Geller

Wrap-Up: At the end of this unit students will end by discussing everything they have learned and experienced. They will be required to write everything in a journal at the end of the 3rd day. They will have to answer the following questions:
·       What was unique about Helen Keller?
·       What did she accomplish?
·       What is braille? And what is it used for?
·       What is sign language?
Assessment

Formative/Ongoing Assessment:

  • Observe and encourage student participation in class discussion, asking and answering questions, and volunteering comments and ideas.
  • Visit students throughout the center activities and provide direction, correct any errors, and affirm successes.

  1. I like your introductory summary in the beginning. It was great for you to add Social Studies to ELA lesson plan. Is there any Social Studies Standard you can refer?

You both lesson plans are reading lesson plans, right? Writing lesson plan?

    Excellent rubrics!

    1. Thanks so much!!!!!! It's both reading and writing. I tried to make them interactive for the students and for them to understand Helen Keller's struggle's and how successful and educated she was. The reason I added Social Studies was because Helen Keller is a historical figure and I wanted to teach students a little about her life. Believe it or not there are so many people who do not know who Helen Keller is, and it saddens me to see that Social Studies seems to be fading out
