Week 8 Math Lesson

This is a lesson plan that I did in a Gifted and Talented Kindergarten Class. It's a really great lesson and it's creative. My students were really engaged, and really had tons of fun :-)

Candidate’s Name: Melissa Slater
Grade Level: Gifted and Talented Kindergarten
Title of the lesson: A-MAIZE-ING PATTERNS
Length of the lesson: 45 Minutes

·        Common Core State Standards
o   Mathematics
§  Patterns – Enrichment
§  No Kindergarten Standards Applicable
§  Enrichment Math Activity

Key questions:
●       What are patterns?
●       How can we create patterns? Give examples.
●       What are pattern Units?

·        Students will give examples of patterns, and explain what patterns are about
·        There will be example given of patterns (red, red, green, red, red, green, etc.)
·        The students will have to give the pattern units of the pattern they will be asked about.
·        They must also be able to retell the story about patterns. Teddy Bear Patterns By: Barbara Barbieri McGrath
·        The students will show patterns by using pattern blocks.
·        Students will create corn cob patterns by using maize kernels.
·        Students will choose a pattern and they will be asked about the pattern unit.

Support mathematic development through language and creativity(academic language)

●       Identify math vocabulary such as pattern units,
●       Identify the pattern units, and create different patterns
●       Create patterns using the corn

Vocabulary
●       Pattern Units
●       Example of Pattern Units:
AB pattern (ABABABABAB…)
AAB pattern (AABAABAABAABAA…)
ABB pattern (ABBABBABBABBAB…)
ABA pattern (ABABABABABABAB…)
ABC pattern (ABCABCABCABCAB…)

Learning objectives:

Students must be able to be able to identify the different patterns and be able to tell the teacher what the pattern units are. Each student needs to also be able to challenge themselves and create a more elaborate pattern.

Given demonstrations of various patterns, the students will be able to understand the concept of a pattern.

Student will be able to distinguish patterns around the classroom, and then the students will need to create patterns with the maize kernels.

Formal and informal assessment (including type[s] of assessment and what is being assessed)

·        Observations from previous class lesson
·        Questioning Technique
·        Class work
·        Calling on Students to explain Pattern Units

Instructional procedure:

Length/Time of Lesson Plan: 45 Mins
This Lesson Plan will take about 45 to an hour.
Materials/Resources:
·        Maize Kernels (Different Color Kernels)
·        Corn Leaves
·        Glue
·        Teddy Bear Patterns By: Barbara Barbieri McGarth
·        Maize Pattern Example
Instructional resources and materials: Technology not used

.
Reflection
●       Did the students learn about pattern units?
●       Did all of my students understand what patterns are?
●       Where students engaged in the project?
●       Did the students challenge themselves creating elaborate patterns?
●       Can the students explain what patterns are?

There are pictures I took of the math assignment that we did with the students. We painted the corn different colors and the students had to make their own patterns.
